Learning Your Grandparent's Skills

Sometimes, (okay, okay... a lot of times) I can get pretty worked up about stuff. Just a week ago, I was at a meeting at church with some older women and we were sharing some recipes that they had from their mothers and grandmothers. Well, this led to a conversation between me and my pastor about how we want to butcher a pig someday. In my enthusiasm of the topic, I said how I want to render my own lard and how awesome that would be.

You know what happened next?

These older ladies laughed at me. Now, they did not do it to be mean at all. I think they were just surprised that I would say something like that. They don't understand that all the things they did and were taught as a children have not been shared or passed down to us who are younger. They are thankful for modern convenience, and so am I, but that doesn't mean we shouldn't learn the skills in case modern conveniences are not so convenient someday.

I'm actually glad the whole conversation happened, and since then, I have been able to think it through more and this is the conclusion I have come to...

If my generation does not learn how to do this stuff, we will lose these skills FOREVER!

Seriously. Just think about all the things are grandparents used to do that we don't do anymore. We are raising a generation of children that think their food comes from a grocery store only! They don't even realize that carrots come from a plant in the ground or that their hamburger they just ate is from a cow.

I'm thirty-nine years old and I remember my grandparent and mom growing gardens, canning produce, and butchering deer. My husband and I are passing all these skills on to my son who will hopefully pass them on to my grandchildren and so on. The scary thing is, most folks are not doing this. The majority of American homes are so busy with making double incomes that they don't have the time to gain skills that could save their lives someday. Money ain't going to save you if the economy collapses...just sayin.

You watch and read the news don't you? You have to know that things can not always stay the same as they are right now. I hate to burst you all's bubble, but things could, and probably will, get bad around here again. Just because we live in a generation that is high-tech with modern day conveniences does not mean it will always stay that way. Do you realized the Great Depression was less than one hundred years ago?!

Oh, how we in America like to think that we don't need to work to learn anything because it's all handed to us on a silver platter. We go to third world countries to try and "save" them but you know who will need the saving if things get bad? Not them. They know how to survive in very rough conditions. They don't take a drive down to the local Wal-Mart to pick up their groceries on a daily basis. Don't get me wrong, we can, and should, help people who need help, but as much as we are giving to them, they also have knowledge they could give to us concerning survival. They would love some of things we have, but they can make it without them if they have to.

Okay, enough of the lecture. The whole point of this post is to tell you don't wait another day to start learning how to be more self-sufficient. Start thinking about your grandparents and what skills they have and start learning them. Go to the library and check out some books. Learn to can for heaven's sake! Even if you can't grow a garden where you are, you can at least support your local farmers' market and put up food from them - just start somewhere.

I'm telling you straight up that if we do not teach these skills to our children, in another hundred years or so, we are going to have a country that totally relies on their grocery stores and government for everything. So run, don't walk, and get started.

Here is a list of skills that you need to start learning:

1. Bake your own bread products.
2. Butcher an animal from killing it to packaging it.
3. Grow a garden.
4. Learn to use a water bath canner and a pressure cooker.
5. Have backup methods for cooking food without electricity.
6. Learn to hunt with a bow and a gun.
7. Have alternative things in your home in place of prescription drugs - like essential oils and herbs.
8. Learn how to forage and what wild plants are edible and not edible.
9. Get an alternative heat source besides and electric or gas.
10. Find a way to collect clean drinking water.
11. Learn to sew, knit, and crochet.
12. Start collecting cooking ware like cast iron pans that will last forever.

I have not succeeded in doing all these things yet, but that's my story, right? That's the journey I'm on and the reason why I hunt and have a homesteading blog. There's no excuse today with all the resources at our fingertips for not learning these skills. Heck, the first thing you should probably do it call up your grandpa and grandma, sit down with a cup of coffee, and start asking them questions. They have valuable information you need to learn. Do it before it's too late and they're not here to teach us anymore.

2015

I thought it would be fun to look back on the 2015 year and see some of the highlights of our year.

This is a picture heavy post. I'm glad I take lots of pictures all year and have a blog to record all the fun, and not so fun, things that happen in our lives.

Remember that time I lost my mind and decided to put together this huge puzzle? That was how our year started off. We glued that puzzle, framed it and stuck it on my boys bedroom wall.

I had my first article and more published in a magazine. I am still writing for the Molly Green Magazine, and I suggest that all homesteading/homeschooling people subscribe to it!

Deer Camp 2015 and Trim Healthy Mama

I wanted to take a minute and update everyone on what's been going on around the homestead. I haven't blogged in awhile because we have had family in town. They left early this morning, which always makes us sad even after 4.5 years of living away from Michigan.

Hunting is great fun but it's even more fun when you get to spend it with friends and family. I'm pretty sure we may never have a year as good as this one again. We all managed to take pretty good bucks this year, and we all made really good shots with little tracking involved. Our freezer is now full to the brim with venison burger, steaks, roast, summer sausage and meat sticks.

My husband has already started making plans for spring food plots, calculating out our cost for them, and where to hang our stands next season. He never stops thinking about deer hunting. I am trying to talk him into either writing a post, or helping me write a post, on how he does food plots. My son and I help with the planting, but he is the mastermind behind it all.

This season we had a smoker and ventured into making our own summer sausage and meat sticks with some of our venison burger. They turned out fantastic, and we are very pleased with the results. We had to buy pork and grind it to add to the venison burger and we used our KitchenAid mixer with the meat grinder attachment. With the price of jerky, meat sticks, and summer sausage, this was an excellent investment and a great way to use up some venison.

In other news, I am giving Trim Healthy Mama another try. I really didn't put in great effort the last time I tried it, and the book was so overwhelming to me that I just gave up. I am that girl who hates shopping when there are too many choices or too much clutter. I feel the same when I read something. I just want the plan and the information on how to do it. I lost 23 pounds in the summer of 2014, and it felt so good to be in the overweight range and not considered obese anymore. I have slowly gained all that back, and I am so disappointed in myself. I am determined to get there again but in a more healthy way than the last time when I basically starved myself and over exercised. I plan to start the program fully on Monday and update you all on my progress. I have been enjoying the Good Girl Moonshine the past couple of days and it seems to keep me from reaching for a pop and gets my water in. Trim Healthy Mama has a store where you can purchase products from them, and they also have a membership program that you can pay for to help you in the weight loss process. It's more reasonably priced than Weight Watchers, but I am not going there yet until I see results from following it on my own.

I hate to even bring up my weight again. I have tried, and failed, so many times in the past, that I just figure everyone is sick of hearing about it. I have to do something though, and this plan, once you learn it, seems pretty reasonable. Plus, people are having such fantastic results on it from losing weight and balancing their hormones to great looking skin and lowered cholesterol and blood pressure numbers. I have nothing to lose but weight.

Homeschooling is about to resume here on the homestead, and I am taking a drastically different approach. I am incorporating more reading and Charlotte Mason style learning into our homeschool day. We are going to be doing more dictating, narrating, and note booking pages with less work sheets and formal lessons.

I also need to get back into my morning routine and get my blogging back on a normal schedule again. I recently added an email sign up link to my blog, so I can send out weekly newsletters to those who are interested. You can find that here.

Hope your deer season and fall are going well! Tell me how it's going in the comments and share this post for those who want to join in on this Trim Healthy Mama journey with me.

How To Can Venison and How To Use It

Have you ever pressure canned venison?

We have been canning venison for quite a few years now. I believe it's worth your time to learn how to do it. We love to use it for vegetable soup, BBQ sandwiches, and venison and noodles. It makes the meat really tender. Basically, anything you would use pulled pork or shredded beef for, you can replace with canned venison.

Here is how you do it:

1. Well first you need a deer and deer meat.

2. Cut your deer meat up into cubes. We cut the neck, front shoulders, and hind quarters up into 1-2 inch cubes.

3. Stuff canning jars with raw meat and use a wooden spoon to help pack it down into jars. Use as much meat as you can stuff in there to make it full.

4. Put 2 tsp of canning salt in jars. Do not add water or liquid to your jars. Put canning lid and ring on after wiping rim of jar to make sure it's cleaned off. This assures that the lid will seal correctly.

5. Put 2-3 inches of water in your pressure canner. Set jars in pressure canner and put lid on on your canner. Make sure you have a really good seal on your pressure canner lid. Bring pressure up to 15 pounds of pressure. Once it's up to pressure and it starts hissing and ticking, you time it for 90 minutes. After 90 minutes, let the pressure come down in your canner before removing jars. This can take up to an hour.

Please don't be afraid of a pressure canner. If used properly they are a really great tool for a homesteader to have in their kitchen.

Leave questions in comment section and share this post to let other people know that they can pressure can their venison!

My Top 10 Favorite Blogs

I decided I wanted to share my favorite blogs with you all today. You will be able to tell shortly after glancing at my list that I have issues. My dear friends, we have known this for awhile now, haven't we? Let's just say that I like a variety of things.

So here are the top 10 blogs or websites that I visit almost daily.

1. The Small Things Blog

Kate is so funny and down to earth. She always makes me laugh in her YouTube videos and also gives me great information on how to use makeup and style my hair. As a former cosmetologist, I love this blog!

2. Stacy Makes Cents

I have followed Stacy at Stacy Makes Cents for as long as I have been following blogs. Her, and her husband, are debt free and try to give advice to others to help them escape the slavery of debt. I watch her almost daily on Periscope and boy does she cracks me up. I have learned how to make better bread and where to get a great looking wallet that's pretty and can keep my cash categories separate.

3. The Elliott Homestead

Shaye Elliott at The Elliott Homestead pretty much lives my dream life. If I had a genie who would grant me a wish, I would chose to live exactly as Shaye does. My husband likes to tease me and say that I don't have the first idea of what it's like to really have a farm and farm animals, but I'd sure like to give it a try! Shaye is down to earth and funny, yet serious and shares her faith regularly. She is also my up-line for my essential oil business!

4. The Unplugged Family

This is by far my favorite homeschooling blog and it has been for years. In fact, she is probably the only homeschooling blog that I visit almost daily. I love her method of teaching and she has really shown me how implement the Charlotte Mason method into our school day. She makes a choice to live against what society says you should do by not having television and choosing to celebrate biblical feasts instead of the commercialism of Christmas and other holidays.

5. The Crush With Lee and Tiffany

Lee and Tiffany are my favorite hunting couple. Glen and I love to watch their show and we buy the seasons as they come out since we don't have a satellite or cable hookup to watch them. They are very passionate about deer hunting. I am pretty sure my husband and Lee could be BFF with how obsessive they both are with deer hunting and food plots. I like Tiffany because she is passionate about hunting but is still very feminine, while being surrounded by a bunch of men.

6. Money Saving Mom

Crystal Paine at Money Saving Mom is so motivating she exhaust me sometimes! She is very encouraging to those who want to start a business online and has a ton of good advice for how to keep your priorities straight and accomplish things during the day. I am going through her Make Over Your Mornings Challenge right now and I just pre-ordered her Money Making Mom book on Amazon.

7. The Prairie Homestead

Jill's blog was the very first homesteading blog I ever followed. I learned a ton from her and she sparked my desire to live a more self-sufficient lifestyle. She has so many homemade recipes on her blog and is such a valuable resource for those who wish to learn about homesteading.

8. Molly Green

Molly Green is a great resource for those who desire the homesteading/homeschooling lifestyle. They also cover home keeping and home industry. Their magazine is pretty darn cool and you can even find articles from me in there! :) Their whole magazine and website pretty much sums up my whole lifestyle. I am a stay at home mom who wants to keep house well, homestead, homeschool, and earn some money while doing all this!

9. Whistle Pig Hollow

Something about Ashley's writing and her laid-back approach to life is appealing. I have reached out to her on several occasions for advice and she is always willing to help. She is so good about telling you when something she has tried is failing or has failed. But then she puts her big girl panties on and tries it again a different way until she succeeds. She is very motivating to me.

10. Homestead Blogger's Network

The Homestead Blogger's Network has been the most valuable thing for my blog. They are the most helpful, friendly, non-catty group out there. There are no quarrels or trying to one-up each other. There entire site is based on trying to help homestead bloggers get their blog posts and information out there to the public. They have been the ones that have helped me get my website up and showed me how to pin my posts on Pinterest, taught me about how to put social media icons on my website and much, much more. They have so many blogs they help promote that I can't even begin tell you all my favorite peeps on here so I will just direct you to their site and tell you that a lot of those blogs they promote are my online friends and you should follow them!

Well, there you go. I told you I was a mixed-up woman. I think I can sum it up by saying I am a woman who likes to be self-sufficient, frugal, homeschool, and hunt..... all while looking good! ;)

Hope your day is filled with what matters most to you and you keep striving to improve yourself on this journey.

Whew, What a Crazy Couple of Weeks

It's Monday morning and I am officially trying to get my routine back in progress. I have started a load of laundry, threw some makeup on, and I am working on this blog post. We have had a great fall break, but today it's back to reality. Glen had to go back to work this morning after having two weeks off so the four a.m. wake up call is back!

Our family arrived the Thursday before last and left this past Friday morning. It was a great time filled with opening day of rifle season here in Kentucky with a couple bucks taken, a trip to the zoo, and more food than any person should eat in their lifetime.

We started by celebrating Evan's birthday with the family. He loves having his family around and they spoil him rotten.

Saturday morning, November 8th, was opening day of rifle season and crossbow season. Glen, Evan, my nephew Tyler, and I all headed out that morning. Evan and Glen with Evan's crossbow, me with my compound bow, and Ty with his rifle.

Nothing warms this mama's heart more than seeing our boy fall in love with Glen and I's hobby.

I was sitting in my stand not seeing anything, and Glen had just texted me that they were not seeing anything either, when I swore I heard a crossbow go off. I waited with my phone in my hand, and sure enough Glen texted and said that Evan had shot a buck. I was so excited I got right out of my stand and headed to where they were hunting. I'm not trying to brag about son (okay, I am) but he smoked that deer. I don't think it even ran 40 yards. Glen said he was as cool as a cucumber when he made the shot.

While we were getting pictures of Evan's deer we hear Tyler shoot. I won't say how many times we heard Tyler shoot...but we finally got a text from him that said he had shot a nice buck and it was down in front of him.

We got Evan's buck up to the house and then Glen went and fetched up Ty and his buck. This is why my husband works all year long on food plots, scouting, and hanging stands. This moment, the one below, makes our whole deer season. We wouldn't even care if we didn't get a deer ourselves.

Well, of course, you know the Dana's by now, and we went right into processing mode. We cut up Evan and Tyler's deer and we were done by Sunday afternoon. The saying "Many hands make light work" is so true.

I knew Evan wanted to do something fun for his birthday with Ty and his Aunt Tanya while they were here so I was checking the weather and saw it was going to be 68 degrees that Monday. I asked Evan if he wanted to go to the zoo and he said he did and was very excited about it. The Nashville Zoo is a great zoo. I would say it is the cleanest zoo that I have ever been to, although, I have not been to many other zoos. This meerkat was a hoot. He stood like this for about 15 minutes like he was posing for us.

Zoo selfie

Lazy kangaroo

Ty and Evan petting the goat. The goats were quite a treat. Especially when one decided to steal a guy's handmade sketch out of his hand and run all over the place with it while the worker was trying to get it away from him. Just a little extra entertainment for us.

Evan had some visitors land on him. His facial expressions are priceless.

Then one bit his ear and he wasn't so cool with that.

The boys went and cut wood while the family was down.

We shut our TV off back around June and we have no antenna to watch the local channels (we haven't missed it either). Pa was bored and discovered bowling on the wii. He actually beat everyone at it once he got the hang of it.

I went out a couple of times bow hunting while the family was here. I have yet to fill my buck tag. It looks like it may be a long season for me this year. I could take my rifle out and get one, but I have not shot a buck with my bow since moving from MI. I am determined to kill one with my bow this year.

So, that's the last couple weeks for you. It's snowing here this morning and I think we are putting up the Christmas tree today. I need to get some cleaning done around here and school done today. I am sure Evan will be super excited about getting back to school....

Dana Deer Camp 2014

It's been pretty quiet on the blog this past week. We had Evan's birthday, followed by Halloween, and then our friend came on Sunday to hunt with us. Our friend will leave today and tonight some of our family from Michigan will arrive to stay until next Friday.

Evan and I are on a fall break from school right now. It's nice to not have to worry about that with everything that's going on around here. He's pretty happy to not have mom nagging him to get his school work done.

The deer hunting has been really good here on the homestead this year. My husband tagged out on opening day with a nice buck and he also put a doe in the freezer a couple weeks after that. We did grind our own meat this year with our KitchenAid mixer. I am pretty happy with the job it did, but I can see us getting a bigger grinder in the future. Eating venison is something we have done for the twenty years we have been together so a larger more expensive grinder would be worth the cost for us. I also made venison jerky in the dehydrator and oh my....I love that stuff. I think I could turn a whole deer into just jerky. The next deer we get we will probably pressure can it and make jerky from it.

I have been hitting the stand pretty hard and I have seen one shooter so far but he was out of range for me. I can shoot to 30 yards and that's as far as I can go at this point. I plan to practice more this summer and up my poundage to 40 yards eventually. I love sitting in the woods this time of the year. It's amazing to be one with nature and you really see God's handy work when you fade into it unnoticed. All the woods come alive just like you are not even there. I highly recommend it.

Opening day of rifle season is on Saturday and we will have a full house for that. It's such a great time of the year for us here! Deer hunting is where it's at folks! I think I will take my bow instead of my rifle. I haven't shot a buck with my bow for four years now and I am itching to get one on the ground with it.

On another exciting note, I had two articles published in the Molly Green Magazine. http://mollygreen.com/

It's a magazine that focuses on HOMEsteading, HOMEschooling, HOMEkeeping, and HOMEindustry. My articles are about how we made our dream come true buying property and building our home in a tractor shed, and also an article about what it's like to be a female deer hunter. My brain is buzzing with what I should write next.

Well, it's four o'clock in the morning here and I will be heading to my stand soon. I hope you all are having a great week.

4-H, Hunting, Pastor Appreciation Dinner

What a busy weekend we had! It seems like we just have one thing planned after another lately. It's all good because cold weather will be here soon and we can settle in our cozy house and rest then. Thursday, after my mother meltdown moment, I took this picture before the science show that we attended with our homeschool group. It was more entertainment than science, but we still had fun.

Friday, we joined our homeschool group again for a 4H club meeting. We have never participated in 4H before. From what I observed on Friday, this is going to be a great opportunity for our homeschool group. Evan gave a speech to try and get elected as secretary of the club. He did such a good job and I was so proud of him for getting up in front of everyone. He did not get elected but he is already working on next years campaign. :)

Afterward, we headed to Chick-fil-A. We don't have a Starbucks or a Chick-fil-A in our town so we take advantage when we are in the bigger towns.

This is a picture of Peaches stalking me while I am in the tub. I love this stinkin' dog. She brings me joy even though she is also a pain sometimes. I am definitely a dog person.

Friday we all headed out to the woods to see if we could get some more meat in the freezer. This was Evan's last weekend to hunt. Unfortunately, he did not get anything. His crossbow season starts again on November 8th and Glen will be hitting it hard with him to try to get him his first buck.

My view on Friday night. It's so beautiful this time of the year.

This was my view on Saturday night. I was sitting opposite of my Friday night stand.

This little guy came in to me. I am looking for something a bit bigger this year. :)

Saturday night I had company at my tree stand. It's not a very good pic because I had to zoom the phone camera all the way. You can see two coyotes on the log in the picture. I wanted to shoot them but I don't want to mess up our woods for when the rut comes.

The week before this last one was very gloomy and rainy. We were in a drought before we received all this rain. It did start to get me blue after so many days of clouds and rain, but our food plots exploded because of it!

Does it get much cuter than this?

I cleaned house on Saturday morning and I couldn't help but snap another picture of our hard work this year putting up fresh vegetables and fruits. I am pretty proud of it. I am excited for next years garden! I don't want to deceive anyone by leading them to think I have this food preservation/homesteading all figured out. I love to can and hunt. I love DIY projects. I also dream of chickens and learning even more skills that have been lost in today's society. But...I also take my child to McDonald's, I eat refrigerator biscuits occasionally, Cheez-Its, and other stuff that some homesteaders/crunchy mamas would think are toxic. I am not an elitist who needs to be part of a club. I am just a country girl that loves gardening, hunting, and baking my own bread who working toward things. I also love make-up, coloring my hair, toxic perfume and lotions, and regular Gain laundry detergent. Most importantly, above all else, I love my Lord and Savior! Whew, just had to get that off my chest I guess. ;)

Glen took this picture when he and Evan were heading back to the house from hunting on Saturday morning. It's just a little reminder from God on what an awesome creator He is!

The weekend ended with a surprise dinner for our Pastor and his family. We managed to pull it off last minute and put together a great dinner. We realized on Friday that it was pastor appreciation month and my friends Sarah, Nicole, and I went into speed mode trying to get it all put together. It was a success and I hope our Pastor and his family truly know how blessed we are to have them in our lives and to be leading our congregation.

Today we are off to another field trip to a pumpkin patch and animal petting farm. I will post pictures from that tomorrow.
