Dana Deer Camp 2014

It's been pretty quiet on the blog this past week. We had Evan's birthday, followed by Halloween, and then our friend came on Sunday to hunt with us. Our friend will leave today and tonight some of our family from Michigan will arrive to stay until next Friday.

Evan and I are on a fall break from school right now. It's nice to not have to worry about that with everything that's going on around here. He's pretty happy to not have mom nagging him to get his school work done.

The deer hunting has been really good here on the homestead this year. My husband tagged out on opening day with a nice buck and he also put a doe in the freezer a couple weeks after that. We did grind our own meat this year with our KitchenAid mixer. I am pretty happy with the job it did, but I can see us getting a bigger grinder in the future. Eating venison is something we have done for the twenty years we have been together so a larger more expensive grinder would be worth the cost for us. I also made venison jerky in the dehydrator and oh my....I love that stuff. I think I could turn a whole deer into just jerky. The next deer we get we will probably pressure can it and make jerky from it.

I have been hitting the stand pretty hard and I have seen one shooter so far but he was out of range for me. I can shoot to 30 yards and that's as far as I can go at this point. I plan to practice more this summer and up my poundage to 40 yards eventually. I love sitting in the woods this time of the year. It's amazing to be one with nature and you really see God's handy work when you fade into it unnoticed. All the woods come alive just like you are not even there. I highly recommend it.

Opening day of rifle season is on Saturday and we will have a full house for that. It's such a great time of the year for us here! Deer hunting is where it's at folks! I think I will take my bow instead of my rifle. I haven't shot a buck with my bow for four years now and I am itching to get one on the ground with it.

On another exciting note, I had two articles published in the Molly Green Magazine. http://mollygreen.com/

It's a magazine that focuses on HOMEsteading, HOMEschooling, HOMEkeeping, and HOMEindustry. My articles are about how we made our dream come true buying property and building our home in a tractor shed, and also an article about what it's like to be a female deer hunter. My brain is buzzing with what I should write next.

Well, it's four o'clock in the morning here and I will be heading to my stand soon. I hope you all are having a great week.

Jenn
